Steam and diesel trains on Wiltshire's only standard gauge heritage railway

Welcome to the S&CR

The S&CR is entirely built, run and managed by volunteers. It was one of the first heritage railways to undertake the complete reconstruction of a standard-gauge railway with no legacy of track or buildings.

Blunsdon is the main 'visitor centre', with car parking, Whistle Stop Cafe, picnic area, shop etc., while Hayes Knoll gives visitors the opportunity to see various restoration projects progressing in the engine shed.

Steam or Diesel?  We have both!

Motive power is provided by Steam and Diesel locomotives. See our Event List to find out when we are running.

Steam engines currently in service include resident Andrew Barclay 0-6-0ST  'Swordfish'.   Diesels include examples of ex-BR  Classes 03, 08 and 09 and a Class 73 electro diesel E6003 'Sir Herbert Walker', plus industrials.  Other steam locomotives may appear as guest locomotives during the year.

Running Days in 2022

Our next public running days will be on the 5th and 6th March 2022.

We also have an exciting list of events lined up for later in the year.

See the list of events at What's On Next?

While public trains are not running...

We will be carrying out essential maintenance and security checks.

We therefore remind everyone

Or never ride with Spartan?>

Return to Cricklade

Over South Meadow Lane and Onwards!

History has now been made.  We have successfully passed the physical and psychological barrier of South Meadow Lane and track is now on the ground farther north than at any time in the last 60 years.

Following many months of clearance activity and preparation we have now laid track to get as far as our initial Phase 1 target of Farfield Lane cutting.  From the end of this section,  the tower of Cricklade church is within sight!

We are still working within our Phase 1 budget, and estimate that a further £8000 is required to complete the necessary drainage, fencing and security gating.  This will then allow us to operate public trains over this extension later in 2022.
