GIVING PERMISSION FOR A TRAIN TO APPROACH AND GIVING TRAIN OUT OF SECTION SIGNAL

        7. - Except where special instructions to the contrary are issued, the Is Line Clear? may be acknowledged, and permission given for a Tablet to be withdrawn when the Line to the Starting Signal applicable to the train that is about to approach is clear and free from obstruction, and the Points, over which it has to pass have been placed in the proper position, and after the Is Line Clear? signal has been acknowledged, and permission has been given for a Tablet to be withdrawn, no obstruction of the Line within the Starting Signal applicable to the train that is about to approach must be allowed, and the Points over which it has to pass must not be moved until the train has passed or been brought to a stand, or the signal, Signal Given in Error, Train last Signalled not coming, has been received from the Tablet Station in the rear.
        Except where special instructions to the contrary are issued, permission may be given in accordance with the Section Clear and Station or Junction Blocked signal, for a train to approach when the Line to the Home Signal applicable to the train that is about to approach is clear and free from obstruction; and after permission has been given for a train to approach in accordance with the Section Clear and Station or Junction Blocked signal, no obstruction of the Line on which the train requires to run must be allowed outside the Home Signal until the train has passed, or been been brought to a stand, or the signal, Signal given in Error, Train last Signalled not Coming, has been received from the Tablet Station in the rear.
        The signal, Train out of Section, must be given immediately the last vehicle, with tail lamp attached (see clause 15) has passed the Home Signal. When practicable, Signalmen must themselves see the tail lamp on the last vehicle before giving the Train out of Section signal to the Tablet Station in the rear; but in cases where a train does not pass the Signal Box before shunting into a Siding clear of the Main Line, or where a train has been brought to a stand within the Home Signal before reaching the Signal Box, and if necessary to give the Train out of Section signal to the Tablet Station in the rear, the Signalman must be informed by the Guard, or some other responsible person, that the whole of the train has arrived, with the tail lamp attached, before giving the Train out of Section signal to the Tablet Station in the rear.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF "IS LINE CLEAR?" SIGNAL

        8. - If the Line is not clear, or if from any other cause the Signalman at the Tablet Station in advance is not in a position to give permission for the train to approach when the Signalman at the Tablet Station in the rear forwards the Is Line Clear signal, the signal must not be repeated or acknowledged, but the Obstruction Danger signal must be given. When the Signalman to whom the signal has been sent is prepared to give permission for such train to approach, he must give the signal, Obstruction Removed; the signal must be acknowledged, and any train requiring to proceed in either direction must be signalled in accordance with these regulations.

TRAIN WORKED BY TWO ENGINES

        9. - When a train has two engines in front, the Driver of the leading engine must carry the tablet.
        No train must run with more than two engines in front.
        When a train has one engine in front and one in the rear, the Signalman must show the Tablet to the Driver of the engine in front of the train. and after having done so deliver it to the Driver in the rear of the train. Trains may only be assisted by an engine in the rear on those sections of the Line where special instructions are issued giving permission for this to be done.

DRIVER NOT TO START UNTIL HE HAS RECEIVED THE TRAIN TABLET AND PROPER SIGNALS

        10. - No Driver must leave a Tablet Station until he has received the proper Tablet for that section of the Line over which he is about to travel, or has seen it in the possession of the Driver of the engine assisting him in front, or it has been shown to him before being handed to the Driver of the engine assisting him in the rear. After receiving the Tablet, the Driver must not proceed until the necessary signals have been exhibited, and when with a train, until a signal has also been given by the Guard. He must keep the Tablet under his own charge, except as provided in clauses 20, 21 and 34, until he reaches the end of the section, when he must give it up to the Signalman in charge of the Tablet Station.
        Drivers must be extremely careful not to take the Tablet beyond the Tablet Station at which it ought to be left.

PENALTY FOR DRIVER LEAVING WITHOUT TABLET.

        11. - A Driver will render himself liable to dismissal if, except as provided in clauses 21 and 23, he leaves a Tablet Station without the Tablet for that section of the Line over which he is about to travel, or has seen it in the possession of the Driver of the engine assisting him in the front, or it has been shown to him before being handed to the Driver of the engine assisting him in the rear.
        A Driver may proceed with his engine on the the Single Line at either end of the Tablet section, as far as is necessary for shunting purposes at the Tablet Station, without being in possession of a Tablet, when authorised by the Signalman to do so, but this must not be done when permission has been given for a train to enter the other end of the section.
